Depending on the species of beetle, the frass can either be extremely fine — like flour or baby powder — or slightly gritty like cornmeal.

Wood beetle frass. Frass refers loosely to the more or less solid excreta of insects, and to certain other related matter. The life cycle of wood-boring beetles consists of egg, larva, pupa and adult. Lyctidae, Bostrichidae, Anobiidae, Cerambycidae and Buprestidae (Figure 1).

Biology and habits of beetles. Powder is often found near wood where holes and tunnels have also been found. Most beetle problems are introduced into homes in lumber or finished wood products such as furniture, paneling, or flooring.

Adult cockroaches gather up all the poop and carry it out of the nest. Frass is a mixture of powderpost beetle larvae excrement and miniscule wood particles that falls out of the exit holes the adult insects make as they emerge. Damage from wood-boring beetles can vary from unsightly pinholes to costly structural repairs.

Wood boring insects and beetles.. Termite frass is essentially ‘kicked out’ of the colony. Fresh wood powder is white and does not clump while old wood powder is yellow and clumpy.

The first thing to do is reduce the moisture content in the wood, to less than 20% moisture. Three groups of wood-boring beetles—powderpost, deathwatch, and false powderpost ()—invade and damage wood furniture as well as structural and decorative wood inside of buildings. The beetle larvae feed in and do most of the damage to wood, and when they reach the adult stage, they emerge through round exit holes, which they create by chewing through the wood surface. Other wood-boring beetles – Larger wood-boring beetles invade wood before it is used in construction and can emerge some time later inside homes.

Powderpost beetles and old house borers damage wood slowly, so there is plenty of time to make a decision on control options. Wood-boring beetles can damage wood in and around a home or building. The texture of this frass is the most gritty of the three groups and distinguishes
