Hi Matt, This is not a Fierce Ground Beetle. Ground beetle, (family Carabidae), any member of more than 40,000 insect species in one of the largest families in the insect order Coleoptera. Cockroaches look similar but differ because they either have no wings or soft wings.
Ground beetles have long, slender legs. Longhorned beetle larvae usually live under the bark, in irregular tunnels. The stag beetle has declined due to a loss of dead wood habitat.
The adult beetles lay their eggs in cracks and holes in the wood and the larvae, or woodworms, eat their way out of the wood over several years. 1 Description and ecology. Most beetle problems are introduced into homes in lumber or finished wood products such as furniture, paneling, or flooring.
Dark brown and unassuming, they have a boxy pronotum and long, narrow abdomen. Ground beetles are recognized by their long legs and shiny black or brown elytra (wing covers), which are decorated with ridges and may be fused together along the midline. Boring beetle larvae make winding tunnels loaded with sawdust-like frass.
True to their name, the insects are regularly found on the ground under logs, rocks, wood, leaves, boards, and other debris. Most species of Ground Beetle are carnivorous, and some will run swiftly to catch their prey. Please understand that that insects do not adhere to man-drawn borders on a map as such they may be found beyond the general "reach" as showcased on our website.
